Description
Offered here is a wonderful piece of ancient art in the form of a silver coin. This coin was struck in Syracuse for Hieron II some time during 275-215 BC on a 21.5mm fine silver flan weighing 6.08 gm. Obv. Diademed head of Gelon II, in unusually high relief, facing left within a beaded border. Rev. Nike, driving a biga to the right with an E below the prancing horses and SYRAKOSEI(OI) above and GELONOS below. Although there has been some obvious loss to the flan, it has not impacted the design to any degree as you can see. The detail and artistry of Hieron II's bust as well as Nike, the biga and the horses is off the charts. I can find no signature on this masterpiece ( the E ?) and if there ever was one , it is off the flan. In the stunning condition shown and nicely toned. Purchased from "baldselenus" on ebay in 2015 with his original COA. Your satisfaction is guaranteed since if you are unhappy with your purchase for any reason , I will refund the initial shipping fee and also pay the return shipping cost for a truly risk-free purchase. NOINTERNATIONAL SHIPPING.
