    Description

the original photograph hung on the walls of pinkerton headquarters on church st. in new york. A copy of the original  also hung on the wall of the pinkerton office in chicago, and in a few other offices, one of which i  have after a dumpster diving soiree. this is a direct copy of the photo, which was from the original negative. the photo image has appeared in books and has been copied and digitized by various sellers. in 1973 i worked for pinkertons as manager of investigations in chicago, and my boss, who had little sense of history, remodelled our offices and rather unceremoniously tossed out a ton of historical photos, posters and other items. i was able to retrieve many of the items and was told to keep them.
this famous photo was undated and the exact location where it was taken is in dispute. it was probably taken in the early 1900's or late 1800's during a respite from chasing the wild bunch. obviously a posed photo, as the clothes are clean, especially the boots, and the men are armed to  the teeth ! william pinkerton, son of the founder allan, sits in the center and is flanked by southern express company agents pat connell and sam finley. all 3 were famous lawmen, and pinkerton, despite being the co owner of the company with his brother robert, preferred to be in the field and was a notorious rough and tumble lawman. on high gloss quality photo paper, about 8 x 11 inches. a bit grainy and dark with smudges on the borders and not the finest clarity of the graphics. shipped in rigid post office mailer. shipping combined for multiple photo purchases.
