ANCIENT GREEK COINS
This auction for 5 bronze Greek coins from the ancient Anatolian city of
Apamea, (
Ἀπάμεια
) Phrygia
which was located on the banks of the Maeander River in what is now western Turkey.
It was founded by the Seleucid king, Antiochus I, in the 3
rd
century B.C. and later became part of the Roman province of Pisidia. It is located near the modern Turkish city of Dinar.
In mythical lore, it was the site of the musical duel between Apollo and Marsyas.
For a long time in antiquity it was one of the greatest cities in Asia Minor because of its position on the Maeander Road; however, when Constantinople was established, its importance declined when the trade routes were diverted.
There are several archeological remains including a Roman theater and many important Greco-Roman inscriptions.
Artemis/Diana
Artemis
was one of the most revered of the ancient Greek deities.
Her Roman equivalent was the goddess Diana.
She was the Hellenistic goddess of the hunt, wild animals, the wilderness, childbirth, the protector of young girls, and relieving disease common to women.
She was often depicted as a huntress carrying bow and arrows and accompanied by a hunting dog.
She also often holds a long torch signifying her association with the moon. She was also associated with deer.
Towered City Goddess
Tyche
was the goddess or personification of fortune, fate, and luck in ancient Greece and Rome.  She was seen as the presiding goddess that looked over the fortunes of a city. For this reason she wore a turreted crown emblematic of the walls or towers of a city.   Many cities in the ancient world depicted the goddess of their city with a towered crown.
Marsyas
In ancient Greek mythology,
Marsyas
was a satyr associated with stories involving Athena and Apollo.
He was often depicted playing a flute and was known for his wisdom, a characteristic not often associated with satyrs.
In Roman times he was thought to be the inventor of augury (prophecy) and a proponent of free speech (parrhesia), or “speaking truth to power”. One statue of Marsyas stood in Rome for over 300 years in which he was cast as a silen (companion of Bacchus), carrying a wineskin and raising his right hand.
This symbol of liberty was used as a place for the common people of Rome to post criticisms or denunciations of other citizens, or to gather for demonstrations.
Some historians have studied Marsyas in their treatment of the history of free speech and or free expression.
